Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled yarns capable of withstanding use for a long period, by blending a specific amount of a ceramic based or metallic oxide based powdery or granular substance in polymer powder, forming the resultant blend into pellet shape, melt spinning the resultant material, then drawing and heat-treating the obtained yarns. CONSTITUTION:A ceramic based powdery or granular substance, such as cordierite, or metallic oxide based powdery or granular substance, such as alumina, having about 0.1-20mu particle diameter is blended in polymer powder, such as polyethylene terephthalate, to form a pellet-like material, which is then melt spun, cooled and solidified to provide an undrawn yarn. The undrawn yarn is subsequently drawn and then heat-treated to afford the aimed yarn without falling off of the powdery or granular substance from the polymer.

The drawing is a block diagram showing the steps of the method for manufacturing ceramic thread according to the present invention, in which a polyethylene terephthalate polymer powder is selected as the base material of the ceramic thread, and a ceramic powder such as cordierite is added to the polymer powder. Alternatively, metal oxide powder such as alumina is mixed to form a pellet-like material.

The powder and granular material is set to have a size of about 0.61 to 20 microns in consideration of the influence on the spinning nozzle and the far-infrared radiation effect. The pellet-like material is made of polyethylene by a melting device (not shown). Temperatures above 260°C to 265°C, which is the melting point of terephthalate, e.g. 28°C
It is heated to 0°C. Further, the molten pellet-like material is maintained at a melt viscosity of 2000 to 5000 P, which is suitable for spinning. Such a pellet-like material is extruded from a spinneret, cooled and solidified, and then wound onto a bobbin as thread.

As described above, according to the present invention, ceramic thread is produced in which ceramic or metal oxide powder is mixed into the polymer, so the powder does not fall off from the polymer, and the thread does not fall off. Flexibility does not decrease, so the properties of the product are improved compared to those coated with ceramics, and the period of use is also longer than that of conventional products.
