It can be broadly classified into two types: so-called chemical coloring, which is colored with a combination of natural pigments and chemicals (``Chemistry of Wood Utilization'', published by Kyoritsu Shuppan, author: Tomotaka Yoshimoto et al.).

However, since the composition of natural product extracts is generally not constant, variations are expected depending on the loft. On the other hand, synthetic dyes do not have the above problems because they have a well-defined chemical structure, but they do have problems such as the depth of natural colors and unnatural discoloration. A common disadvantage of all of the above methods is that the coating amount per unit of dyed area is required to be 1 .mu./ci or more.

By converting natural pigment precursors (colorless) into pigments in a manner as close as possible to the process by which wood creates pigment components in nature, we are able to express a color tone that is closer to that of natural wood when coloring wood. It is characterized by the use of norlignans as a precursor of natural pigments.

μg/eta is preferred. When the amount of impregnation is within this range, it is possible to express the appropriate color tone of natural materials (particularly the color of natural cedar wood). In the impregnation, the norlignans are dissolved in a solvent such as alcohols or esters and impregnated into the wood that has been previously subjected to decolorization treatment. After impregnation, if it is necessary to forcibly develop color, the wood impregnated with norlignans is exposed to natural light or air oxidized by heating. In the case of heating, the heating temperature is preferably 0 to 100°C and the heating time is preferably 5 to 24 hours.
