Abstract

PURPOSE:To develop a lightweight optical glass having a high refractive index and low dispersion by incorporating Nb2O5 and CaO having comparatively small sp.gr. and affording a high refractive index into an optical glass composition as essential components. CONSTITUTION:The optical glass has the following composition. A starting material is melted, homogenized, and annealed to obtain the glass contg. 5-32% SiO2 and 5-40% B2O3 where SiO2+B2O3=30-51%, 16-25% La2O3 and 0-5% Y2O3 where La2O3+Y2O3=16-25%, 1-15% Nb2O5, 1-8% ZrO2, 13-32% CaO and 0-15% MgO where CaO+MgO=13-32%, <10% ZnO, <5% BaO, <8% SnO, <5% PbO, <4% TiO2, <5% Ta2O5, <5% WO3, <8% Al2O3, and <8% P2O5. The high-refractive index and low dispersion optical glass having 1.67- 1.78 nd, 41-55 nud, and 3.0-3.9 sp.gr. can be obtained.

Many optical glasses are already known that satisfy the optical constants described in ``. For example, in Japanese Patent Publication No. 36-1394,
Th02. Glass containing CdO, and
No. 6,326 teaches a number of glasses containing Gd2O3. Glasses that do not contain these components include, for example, glass containing a large amount of BaO, as seen in Japanese Patent Publication No. 44-26911, and glass containing a large amount of Zn, as shown in Japanese Patent Application Laid-open No. 101414-1982.
Glass containing O, Ta205 is known. but,
Since these conventional glasses contain a large amount of ZnO1Ta20s, SAO, etc., they usually have a high specific gravity.

La2O3 is an essential component for maintaining a high refractive index and low dispersion, but it is also a component that deteriorates chemical durability and increases specific gravity, so it is limited to 16 to 25%. Y
2 Ch is effective because it gives optical constants equivalent to L-a203 and has a smaller specific gravity than LazO3, but since it is an expensive raw material, it is limited to 5% or less. As mentioned above, Nb2O5 is an essential component to obtain a high refractive index and low specific gravity, and 1% or more is required, but if it exceeds 15%, the desired high Abbe number cannot be maintained. ZrO2 gives almost the same specific gravity as N1) 205 and increases the Atsube number, so 1%
This is necessary, but if it exceeds 8%, the devitrification resistance U will deteriorate rapidly. CaO is required to be at least 13% because it stabilizes the glass and gives it a low specific gravity, but if it exceeds 32%, it not only makes the glass unstable, but also deteriorates its chemical durability. MQO can be partially replaced with Cao without increasing the specific gravity, but if it exceeds 15%, devitrification resistance deteriorates. Other components are mainly added for the purpose of adjusting optical constants, improving devitrification resistance, improving meltability, etc., including ZnO, Rag, SrO, P, and bO.

Ta205. Since WO3 is a component that increases specific gravity, it is limited to less than 10%, 5%, 8%, 5%, 5%, and 5%, respectively. Furthermore, since TiOa reduces the number of spots and strengthens coloring, it is limited to less than 4%, and Al2O3°P2O5 deteriorates devitrification resistance, so it is limited to less than 8%, 6%, and 6%, respectively. In addition to this, there are other purposes such as clearing, embellishing, etc.ff117)AS
