Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the decrease in the quality of a display even after long- term use by providing an electrochromic layer on a transparent conductive film consisting of a plastic film as a substrate. CONSTITUTION:A film 1 produced by coating an indium tin oxide 2 on polyester is used as a transparent plastic film, and an electrochromic (EC) layer 3 is formed by sputtering of WO2 thereon, whereby an EC electrode is formed. An aq. 1N H2SO4 is used for an electrolyte, and a mixture of WO3 and carbon powder mixed with a resin is used for a counter electrode 6. A background plate 5 and a counter electrode support 7 are added to these to provide an EC display device. Any transparent org. polymer films of polyimide and polyamide imide in addition to the above are usable as the film. It is equally well to form the EC layer by sputtering of MoO3.

A display device (hereinafter referred to as KOD) that displays a predetermined pattern using electrochromic phenomenon seals an electrolytic substance between a display-side substrate made of glass and a counter substrate placed opposite this. A transparent conductive film having a predetermined pattern is provided on the inner surface of the display-side substrate, and an EC electrode film made of a substance (-○ material) exhibiting the K[Kelectp4hack phenomenon] is formed thereon.

However, when glass is used for the substrate, sodium ions in the glass diffuse into the 80 layer through the transparent conductive layer. Therefore, Na2W011. reacts with To, Mob, etc. used in the PC layer. Even when forming a shiba pattern by sputtering or the like with a δ-peripheral mo material, which is known to cause the formation of soluble salts such as Na2M0011 and shorten its lifespan, Na ions in the glass may form 80 layers and become transparent. It is known that it has an adverse effect on the conductive layer, and in order to improve this problem, a method of providing a transparent insulating film between the transparent substrate and the transparent conductive film has been carried out (Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 1137-1983).
