Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the damage to a propeller, which can be elevated by means of a hydraulic cylinder, by constituting said hydraulic cylinder so that it allows the propeller to be lifted upward when an obstacle collides therewith and makes the propeller perform its function again thereafter.
CONSTITUTION: When an obstacle collides with an outboard motor 5 while a craft is traveling forward, an external force is applied to a hydraulic cylinder 6 so as to expand the same. Consequently, in a hydraulic chamber 6c in the hydraulic cylinder 6, a fluid pressure high enough to push a damping valve 6f open is generated, so that the fluid in the hydraulic chamber 6c flows into a hydraulic chamber 6d through the damping valve 6f, and the hydraulic cylinder 6 is expanded to allow the outboard motor 5 to pivot upward. When the outboard motor 5 no more receives the external force from the obstacle, under the outboard motor 5's own weight and a thrust, the piston 6e of the hydraulic cylinder 6 moves downward while pushing out the fluid in the hydraulic chamber 6d into the hydraulic chamber 6c through a check valve 6g. Then, the hydraulic cylinder 6 is contracted so that the outboard motor 5 is allowed to pivot downward, restored to the original position and maintained there.
