Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a vulcanized rubber improved in the resistance to ozone, oils and flame, by treating the surface of a vulcanized rubber containing nitrile- butadiene with vapor of a chlorinating agent.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of nitrile-butadiene vulcanized rubber or nitrile-butadiene blend vulcanized rubber is treated with vapor of a chlorinating agent. As the chlorinating agent use is made of thionyl chloride, chlorosulfonic acid, chlorine gas or the like. However in view of the easiness of the handling, the chlorinating effect, the low cost and others, thionyl chloride is especially preferred. The reaction period will depend on the concentration of the vapor of chlorinating agent and the reaction temperature, and will be 1minW20hrs preferably on the order of 0.5W8hrs. If the reaction time with the chlorinating agent is further prolonged, the reaction would not proceed to the inner part to damage the flexibility. The reaction temperature is preferably 20W50°C.
