Abstract

PURPOSE: To control the generation of NOx in a hydrogen flame without incurring any great loss of pressure by a method wherein an incombustible filler material is filled in an initial stage combustion chamber of the captioned double stage combustion method using hydrogen as a fuel.
CONSTITUTION: The incombustible filler material 4 such as a number of sliced pieces of a coiled iron wire (with the diameter of 1mm and each winding diameter of the coil being about 1cm) is filled in the initial stage combustion chamber (a pre-combustion chamber) 1 so that the voids of the chamber 1 becomes higher than 90% by volume of the chamber 1. Further, primary air is supplied into the chamber 1 from a primary air pipe 2 so as to obtain a combustion air ratio of between 0.2 and 0.9 to thereby burn the hydrogen gas supplied into a fuel pipe 3. Thus, by taking the above steps, the generation of NOx in the hydrogen combustion flame can be reduced. In this case, the larger the length of the chamber 1, the greater the effect of controlling the generation of NOx will take place as will be seen in the attached graph.
