Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled comound with a very low content of an unreacted unsaturated nitrile in high yield, by subjecting a reaction product of the unsaturated nitrile with sulfuric acid and water to reduced pressure while keeping at a temperature not to cause the deterioration in yield, and hydrolyzing or esterifying the treated reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: An unsaturated nitrile is reacted with sulfuric acid and water by the conventional method to give an unsaturated carboxylic acid amide. The resultant reaction product is then fed to an evaporating apparatus while being kept at such a temperature as not to reduce the amidation yield, e.g. 100W 115°C, and subjected to a reduced pressure in the apparatus to evaporate and remove the remaining nitrile. According to the operation, the level of the unreacted unsaturated nitrile is reduced to 100ppm or less, based on the molar ratio to the supplied nitrile. The reaction product after the removal of the unreacted unsaturated nitrile is then hydrolyzed or esterified to give the aimed compound.
EFFECT: The treatment can be easily carried out under mild conditions with a reduced amount of the sulfuric acid to be used and a reduced amount of ammonium bisulfate of improved quality formed as a by-product.
