Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain titled copolymer capable of forming tires excellent in wet skid performance and rolling friction performance, by carrying out the polymerization reaction in a hydrocarbon solvent under conditions in which an organic Li initiator and a specified anionic surfactant are present and the temperature is increasing.
CONSTITUTION: In copolymerizing styrenr with butadiene in the presence of an organic Li initiator, e.g., n-butyllithium, in a hydrocarbon solvent, e.g., cyclohexane, the copolymerization is carried out in the presence of a Lewis base, e.g., diethylene glycol dimethylether, and a surfactant containing -SO3M or -OSO3M wherein M is Na, K, Rb or Cs, e.g., potassium dodecylbenzenesulfonate and under conditions including increasing temperature, thereby to obtain a styrene/butadiene random copolymer, average vinyl content 20W70%, vinyl content distribution width ≥20%, Mooney viscosity (ML1+4,100°C) 10W150, styrene content 5W 35wt%. This copolymer can provide a rubber material having a good balance among wet skid, rolling friction, friction and break.
