Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the size of the titled connecting structure and to improve the detaining efficiency by using metallic sleeves which are caulked together with a wire having high tensile strength to the outer section of two cylinders whose inner part is used for passing through optical fibers, when optical submarine cables containing optical fibers are connected to each other. CONSTITUTION:To connect two lines of optical submarine fibers containing an optical fiber 1 and a wire having high tensile strength 3 to each other, two pieces of cylinders 10 and two pieces of metallic sleeves 7 are used. The cylinder 10 is made of a hardened copper and is harder than the sleeve. The wire 3 is inserted several cm into a space between the cylinder 10 and the inner wall of a containing hole 7a of the sleeve 7, and the sleeve 7 and the cylinder 10 are press-contacted by pressing after a die is fitted arround the sleeve 7. Because of the hard cylinder 10 protecting the fiber 1, the detaining capacity between the sleeve 7 and the wire 3 is remarkably improved. Then, the fibers are optically connected to each other, and the sleeves 7 are mechanically connected to each other by tightening a nut 8 engaged to a thread section 11 of the sleeve 11.
