Abstract

PURPOSE:To permit a direct measurement of Cl ions in the whole blood, by using a monovalent anion exchage resin film of homogeneous film structure as a boundary film, bringing a given inner fluid and a living body sample solution into contact with each other, and detecting the difference between the potentials at both sides of the boundary film. CONSTITUTION:An ion exchange film 4 is placed at the bottom of an indicating electrode chamber 1, which is filled with an electrode inner fluid 5 so that the ion exchange film 4 defines the border between a solution 3 and the electrode fluid 5. An electrode 6 is inserted into the electrode inner fluid 5. A reference electrode chamber 2 is filled with the same solution as the solution 5 in the electrode chamber 1, and a fluid communicating part 8 is provided between the solutions 3 and 7. Moreover, a reference electrode 9 of the same structure as the electrode 6 is inserted into the reference electrode chamber 2. Because the electrode fluid 7 is electrically conducting to the solution 3 through said part 8, both the fluids have the same potential, while a potential difference proportional to the logarithm of the monovalent anion activity ratio of the solution 3 to the electrode fluid 5 arises between both sides of the film 4, and said potential difference is measured as the potential difference between the electrodes 6 and 9. By such a constitution, it is possible to directly mesure the Cl ions in the whole blood.
