Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a cellulose ester anisotropic membrane with excellent selectivity as well as permeability by esterifying a membrane comprising a cellulose derivative by an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having a specific number of a carbon atom.
CONSTITUTION: The cellulose ester anisotropic membrane is one comprising a cellulose derivative esterified with a linear and/or a branched chain aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having 6W16 carbon atoms. For example, a solution prepared by dissolving a polymer in a mixed solvent consisting of a volatile good solvent for the polymer and a nonsolvent therefor is cast onto a support having a smooth surface and after a part or all of said volatile good solvent is volatilized, the formed membrane is immersed in a coagulating bath and, thereafter, dried to obtain said cellulose ester anisotrapic membrane. The resulting membrane consists of a dense porous layer with a thickness of 0.01W10μm and a coarse porous layer with a thickness of 50W300μm and has excellent gas permeability, selectivity and high mechanical strength.
