Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent electrolytic corrosion of shafting of the propulsion shaft of ships effectively by applying specific electrolytic corrosion preventing facilities to stuffing boxes, intermediate shaft bearings, stern bearings, etc. for the propulsion shaft.
CONSTITUTION: The inside surface of a stuffing box 7 provided in the hull-penetrating part of a propulsion shaft 3 and the inside surface of a packing gland are coated with resin type films, and an insulanting material is used as a gland packing. On the other hand, protecting anodes are provided to an intermediate shaft bearing 16, and a stern bearing 20 respectively to apply electrolytic corrosion prevention. The propeller 6 mounting part of the shaft 3 is sealed at both ends thereof with O- rings, and a propeller cap is formed of a protective anode. Hence, while the ship is stopping, the entire part of the ship is preveted of electrolytic corrosion by the protective anode mounted to the hull, and during sailing the metal to metal contact of the shaft 3 and the hull is interrupted but the electrolytic corrosion of the propulsion shafting is prevented by the protective anodes of the bearing 16 and the bearing 20 and the propeller cap as the protecting anode.
