Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable a high speed printing, by accomodating a circular ink ribbon made of a plurality of various color ribbons of prefixed length into a cassette and providing means for detecting the color of the ink ribbon exposed at an opening in the cassette in order to make changing of upper or lower portions of the ribbon unnecessary. CONSTITUTION:A three-color ribbon, for example, of a red ribbon 5, a blue ribbon 6 and a yellow ribbon 7 having a predetermined length l1 longer than the maximum printing width of a serial printer is circularized through non-color ribbons 8, 9, 10 of a prefixed length l2. On the non-color ribbons, detecting hole 8a (one hole), 9a (two holes), 10a (three holes) for discriminating the color of ribbons are formed respectively. Means (for example, a photo sensor 22 consisting of a light emitter and a light receiver) for detecting the ink ribbon color exposed at the opening of the cassette after the ink ribbon accomodated within the cassette 11.
