Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase the angle of deflection of a beam with a low applied voltage by forming a thin transparent film on both surfaces of a thin film which while made of a transparent material substrate, varies in refractivity according to the application of an electric field, and by providing a couple of facing electrode with the thin films interposed. CONSTITUTION:On both the surfaces of a thin film 4 which is composed of a transparent material substrate, varies in refractivity according to the application of an electric field, a thin film 5 which is optically transparent and has less refractivity than that of the thin film 4 is formed to constitute two-dimensional waveguides. Then, a couple of electrodes 7 facing mutually are provided on the thin films 5 with the waveguides interposed. As a voltage is applied from a power source 8 to an electrode 7, an electric field generates gradient of refractivity in the thin film 4 and at right angles to a waveguide light-traveling path 6. Thus, the two-dimensional waveguides are each made of the thin film and the gap between the electrodes 7 are narrowed to obtain high electric field intensity with a relatively low voltage, thereby increasing the angle of deflection of the beam.
