Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance in a large quantity at a low cost from cultivated microbial cells, by cultivating a photosynthetic bacterium having the ability to produce the titled substance in a culture medium containing specific components.
CONSTITUTION: A species of photosynthetic bacterium having the ability to produce coenzyme Q10, e.g. Rhodospirillum photometricum or Rhodopseudomonas spheroides, is cultivated in an ordinary culture medium containing a carbon source, e.g. glucose or starch, a nitrogen source, e.g. ammonium succinate or urea, and another inorganic component, and further isopentenyl alcohol and/or dimethylallyl alcohol added thereto. The cultivation is carried out under conditions selected from aerobic and anaerobic cultivations by the batch, sprinkling method, etc. The resultant coenzyme Q10 is then extracted from the microbial cells by the saponification, extraction with ether, adsoprtion column chromatography, etc.
