Abstract

PURPOSE:To simplify the structure and manufacture of a glow plug used in a diesel engine and also to improve its temperature-rise characteristic, by making a heater rod by joining a pair of ceramic rods having a resistor at one joining surfaces thereof, and constituting a glow plug by assembling the heater rod into a hollow holder. CONSTITUTION:A glow plug 10 of this invention consists of a heater rod 14 and a holder 15 in the form of a substantially tubular shape which is adapted for holding the heater rod 14 at its top. To the rear end of the holder 15, an extenal connecting terminal 17 is fitted by the intermediary of an insulating bush 16 made of a synthetic resin or the like. The heater rod 14 had a substantially elliptic cross section and is formed by joining, under compression, a pair of ceramic rods 12, 13 having a resistor 11 on one of the joining surfaces. The resistor 11 consists of a heater section 11a and a first and a second lead sections 11b, 11c. The heater section 11a is shaped to have a smaller width than the lead sections 11b, 11c. Further, the lead sections 11b, 11c are connected electrically to metal coating layers 19, 20 applied over the outer surface of the heater rod 14, and the heater rod 14 is reinforced by a metal pipe 21 fitted on the rod 14.
