Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an austenite stainless steel with superior stress corrosion cracking resistance without remarkably increasing the manufacturing cost by adding Cu to SUS304 stainless steel.
CONSTITUTION: This austenite stainless steel consists of, by wt., 16W24% Cr, 6W15% Ni, ≤0.04% P, 0.4W1.5% Cu and the balance Fe with usually allowable impurities such as C, Si, Mn and S. Cu is known as an element improving corrosion resistance to nonoxidizing acid. On the other hand, when corrosion proceeds in a soln. of neutral chloride, it is considered that a liq. in corroded pits or crevices is similar to salts in properties. Accordingly, it is considered that Cu is effective in inhibiting the growth of local corrosion. Cu forms no passive film and only inhibits active dissolution, so it is considered that corrosion hardly reaches stress corrosion cracking. By adding W to the steel, the pitting and crevice corrosion resistances are improved furthermore.
