Abstract

PURPOSE:To permit an optical switch or optical modulator, which utilizes electrooptic effect, to operated only with light by applying a voltage to it through a photoelectromotive force layer by light. CONSTITUTION:In a substrate 31 of LiNbO3, PLZT, etc., having electrooptic effect, waveguides 32 and 32' are provided to constitute a directional coupler type switch. When no voltage is applied to an electrode 34, light 33 incident to the waveguide 32 is guided to the waveguide 32' and emitted as light 33'. Light incident from a fiber 38 passed through a rod lens 37 to obtain parallel luminous flux, which is made incident to a photoelectromotive force layer 35 of CdTe, etc., on a glass layer 35, thereby applying a voltage to the electrode 34. At this time, the light incidnet to the fiber 32 travels straight to be emitted as light 3'. Thus, the device operates only with light.
