Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal compsn. which contains a cyanogen coloring matter having excellent order parameter, absorptivity coefficient, stability and solubility, by incorporating a specified anthraquinone coloring matter.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal compsn. contains an anthraquinone coloring matter of formula I wherein R1 is H; alkyl whose methylene group may be substituted with O, COO, OCO or benzene ring; alkyl contg. a multiple bond; cycloalkyl; or a radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkoxy, cycloalkyl, aryl, hydroxy, acyloxy, acylamino, sulfonyloxy, sulfonamide, carboxylate ester, carbamoyl, sulfonate ester, sulfamoyl, dialkylamino, halogen, nitro and aryl group which may be substituted with cyano group. The compd. of formula I can be produced by reacting a compd. of formula II (where X is H or =NH) with a compd. of formula III.
