Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the pitting resistance of low-alloy cast iron contg. Cr without using expensive Mo by subjecting the case iron to specified heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: A valve lifter of an engine for a car is cast from cast iron having a composition contg. 2.4W3.5% C, 1.4W2.5% Si, 0.5W1.5% Mn, 1.0W1.7% Cr and 0.2W0.7% Ni and satisfying the relation of C%+1.5×Cr%=4.5W5.2%. This casting is heated at 800W950°C for 2W10hr, hardened in oil at ordinary temp. W80°C, and tempered at a low temp. such as 140W200°C for 0.5W2hr. By replacing expensive Mo with inexpensive Cr, the pitting resistance of the valv lifter is enhanced at a low cost.
