Abstract
PURPOSE: To collect an antitumor substance which is an anticancer substance from a culture and/or culture medium, by the tissual culture of a plant, belonging to the genus Tripterygium, and having the ability to produce the antitumor substance.
CONSTITUTION: A plant, e.g. Tripterygium wilfordii, belonging to the genus Tripterygium, and having the ability to produce an antitumor substance belonging to a diterpenoid triepoxide of the formula (R is H or hydroxyl group) is cultivated. Tissual pieces, e.g. stalks, leaves or roots, of the plant are cut, sterilized and cultivated to induce a callus. The resultant callus is then cultivated on a solid culture medium or in a liquid culture medium by the operation similar to that of the ordinary cultivation of microorganisms. Examples of the culture medium include the Murashige-Skoog culture medium or White culture medium containing sucrose, a growth regulating substance, etc. The aimed substance is then separated from the resultant cultivated cells, cultivation filtrate, etc.
