Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal optical device having high speed responsiveness, by using a liquid crystal composition in which an optically active substance is added to nematic liquid crystal generating dielectric relaxation in a long axial direction of liquid crystal molecule and driving by using the specific high and low two kinds of frequencies of voltage. CONSTITUTION:An optically active nematic liquid crystal composition having <=100kHz cross frequency fc at normal temp. whose dielectric anisotropy becomes zero is sealed in between substrates 1, 1 on which transparent electrodes 2 are provided respectively. Liquid crystal molecule is disposed to be parallel on the surfaces of substrates and is subjected to an orientation treatment so that the upper substrate surface crosses at a right angle to the lower substrate surface. Polarizing plates 6.7 are disposed so that the polarizing directions cross at right angles respectively. The thickness of a liquid crystal layer (d) is regulated within three times as much as a spiral pitch of the liquid crystal composition. A driving circuit converting voltage fh having a frequency larger than the frequency fc and voltage fe having a frequency smaller than fc and applying, is provided. By this way, a liquid crystal optical device suitable for light valve etc. which are able to make and break at the high speed more than several ten times as high as the usual products.
