Abstract

PURPOSE:To make compact an engine in which a plurality of cylinders are arranged as V and cam shafts for driving intake and exhaust valves are provided over the cylinders, by placing a cam shaft drive mechanism in the space between the cylinders to efficiently use the space. CONSTITUTION:In a V-engine A, two cylinders (a), (b) are arranged as V in a fore and a hind positions as to the direction of movement. Intake valves 4, 5 and exhasut valves 6, 7 are provided on the heads a2, b2 of the cylinders (a), (b). Cam shafts 8-11 for driving the valves 4-7 are provided between the upper ends of the cylinder heads a2, b2 and covers 12, 13 for them. A driving mechanism (c) for the cam shafts 8-11 is placed in the space (d) between the cylinders (a), (b) and interlocked with a crankshaft 3. The countershaft 15 of the driving mechanism (c) is located in the housing section 14 of the space (d) and interlocked with the crankshaft 3 and the cam shafts 8-11 through chains 18, 26, 27.
