Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain carbon fibers having improved spinning property and infusibility and a high strength, by heat-treating coal tar after the removal of insoluble solid materials at a high temperature in a short time under reduced pressure, melt spinning the resultant tar, making the spun fibers infusible, and carbonizing the infusible fibers.
CONSTITUTION: A coal tar or coal tar pitch after the removal of insoluble solid materials is heat-treated at 420W600°C for 10min or shorter at 20mmHg abs. or below to prepare a heat-treated material, which is then melt spun at 280°C, heated from room temperature to 300°C at a given heating rate in air and kept at the temperature for 15min and made infusible. The resultant infusible fibers are then heated to 1,000°C at a given heating rate in an argon atmosphere, kept at the temperature for 15min and carbonized to give the aimed carbon fibers. Preferably, the heat treatment is carried out in the presence of a heterocyclic compound containing nitrogen, e.g. pyridine, in an amount of 3W50wt%.
