Abstract
PURPOSE: A novel compound, consisting of a compound oxide of Yb, Ga and Co, expressed by YbGaCoO4, and having the hexagonal layered structure.
CONSTITUTION: Yb, Yb2O3 or a compound decomposable into Yb2O3 by heating is mixed with Ga, Ga2O3 or a compound decomposable into Ga2O3 by heating and Co, CoO or a compound decomposable into CoO by heating. The respective particle diameters thereof are preferably ≤10μm. The atomic ratio of Yb/Ga/Co is 1:1:1. The mixed powder is then heated at 1,000°C or above in the air, an oxidizing atmosphere or such a reducing atmosphere as not to reduce Ga and Co from the trivalent and bivalent ionic states. After the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture is guenched to 0°C or quickly taken out to the air and give the amied YbGaCoO4 compound, assuming black color, and found to have the crystal structure by the X-ray diffractometry. The crystal structure is the same as YFe2O4 already obtained by the applicant.
