Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain reduced weight, a decreased diameter, and stabilized characteristics with regard to a pipe unit, by covering a bundle of fiber wires with a plastic pipe which has an increased Young's modulus and a decreased coefficient of linear expansion by being crystallized over orientation by dielectric heating and elongation. CONSTITUTION:Optical fiber wires 10 are uncoiled from feeding machines 11 and put together, and the bundle of wires is sheathed with a plastic pipe formed by an extruder 12 and a cross head 14. This pipe, after being cooled in a cooling vessel 15, is heated by a dielectric heating machine 21 and drawn at the same time by varying the speed ratio of a drawing roller 17 to obtain a pipe which has a high Young's modulus and a low coefficient of linear expansion, and the assembly of the optical fiber wires is covered with the pipe. This pipe unit is annealed and then wound around a winding machine 20 through a pulling machine 19.
