Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce a high pressure discharge lamp having the reduced discharge restart voltage without sacrifice of the service life of the lamp, by connecting the auxiliary starting member composed of the metallic member such as molybdenum, tungsten, etc. such that it will be at the same potential with the main electrode at least when starting the discharge. CONSTITUTION:In the drawing 15 is the auxiliary starting member comprised of a metallic member 16 composed of the molybdenum wire of 0.8phi and a tubular silicon insulator 17 covering said metallic member 16 while having the blind tip, where one end of said member 16 is connected electrically and mechanically to the supporting frame 4 which is the same potential with one main electrode 2 while the other end of said member 16 is arranged at the outside of the light emission tube while slightly separated from the other main electrode 3. Molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum, iron, or stainless steel is preferable as said metallic member 16. The reason is that it has high work function to reduce the emission of the electron even for the irradiation of the ultraviolet ray while it is thermally withstandable even when arranged in the proximity of the light emission tube 1.
