Abstract
PURPOSE:To eliminate formation strain and to avoid loss in a low-temperature area by removing at least external layer parts of sheath layers at the external circumferences of the end parts of a couple of sheathed optical fiber ends to be connected mutually, and thermally welding the terminals of both the sheathed optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:Sheath internal layer parts 3A and 2B and sheath extenal layer parts 4A and 4B are removed by desired lengths from the external circumferences of the end parts of sheathed optical fibers 1A and 1B, thus obtaining sheath-removed parts 5A and 5B. Further, the terminal sides of the sheath-removed parts 5A and 5B are cut vertically to form butt end surfaces 6A and 6B. The butt end surfaces 6A and 6B are butted against each other and then heat- sealed by the discharge heating, etc., of a couple of discharging electrodes 7M and 7N. The connection part is set in a forming device 8 and a connecting sheath layer 9 of thermoplastic resin such as nylon is formed around the external circumference of the connection part.
