Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the wasteful use of a magnetic tape MT, by writing patterns, where one block has a prescribed length, continuously and measuring an effective length of these blocks and writing the effective length in the volume label of the tape and comparing the length before copy. CONSTITUTION:A source MT is mounted on an MTU0, and a copy MT is mounted on an MTU1, and the source MT is copied to the copy MT. In this case, volume labels of these MTs are read and confirmed in both MTUs, and effective lenghts of respective MTs are compared with each other. The measurement of the effective length is described below. If the effective length of the source MT is not longer than that of the copy MT, the copy processing is performed. Otherwise, it is indicated that the source MT is longer than the copy MT. In respect to the measurement of the effective length and the initialization of MTs, a pattern is so generated in a pattern data generator 34 that one block has a prescribed length, and these patterns are written continuously. They are written till the EOT detection, and the number of blocks is counted by a counter 36, and the effective length of the MT is calculated in a multiplier 37. This effective length is written in the volume label.
