PURPOSE:To record and reproduce a high density video and audio signal for portable and home-use VTRs with the same cassette, by providing a specific tape pattern. CONSTITUTION:As a tape pattern for a portable set, A is a control track width, B is a control video guard width, C is full width of a video signal recording band including overlapped part, D is an audio/video guard width, E is the 1st channel for audio, G is the recording width for the 2nd channel, and F is an audio/audio guard width. As a tape pattern for home use VTRs, as shown in another figure, H is an audio recording band with time compression by a rotating head, O is a video/audio guard width, M is a video guard width, and N is an audio/control guard width. Thus, a system can be obtained, in which the speed of audio recording is that with a fixed head for a portable VTR and the same speed or a half of the portable set for a home-use VTR, by using the same cassette tape.
