Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a sufficient electrolytic voltage lowering effect, by employing a cation exchange membrane having a gas-liquid-permeable porous layer, which is void of electrode activity, for an ion exchange membrane surface dividing a cathode and an anode of an electrolytic cell.
CONSTITUTION: At least one of the cathode and anode of the ion exchange membrane electrolytic cell of an aqueous solution containing, for example, alkali halide is arranged for the membrane surface via the layer comprising a gas- liquid-permeable porous membrane molded body that is void of electrode activity. The electrolytic voltage lowering effect due to the use of the cation exchange membrane having such a porous layer on the surface may be varied depending on the type of the porous layer, the porocity and the thickness. For instance, nonwoven fabric of fluoroplastic having a porocity on the order of 10W90% and a thickness of the order of 0.01W200μ is preferably used.
