Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a single crystal of chrysoberyl shedding luster, by forming a single crystal of chrysoberyl containing Ti2O3 by floating zone method, annealing it under an oxidizing atmoshpere so that TiO2 is exsolved and precipitated.
CONSTITUTION: A composition comprising BeO, Al2O3, and Ti2O3 in a molar ratio of 1:1:(0.0005W0.05) is used a raw material bar, a solvent is set under the raw material bar, and a seed crystal under the solvent. They are heated by floating zone method under nonoxidizing atmosphere in such a way that the solvent part is melted, the melt zone is transferred, and a single crystal is grown on the solvent. The prepared single crystal is annealed under an oxidizing atmosphere, so TiO2 is exsolved and precipitated in the gingle crystal. The single crystal obtained by floating zone method is used as the raw material bar, and the growth of single crystal is repeated. Consequently, the crystallization of single crystal is further stabilized, to give a high-quality single crystal of chrysoberyl.
