Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a uniform plastic coating layer, continuously on an optical fiber, by attaching fine plastic powder to the surface of an optical fiber immediately after softening and spinning of an optical fiber preform, and heating and melting the plastic powder.
CONSTITUTION: The optical fiber obtained by softening and spinning the optical fiber preform 1 in a heating and spinning furnace 2, is introduced into the preliminary heating furnace 4 and heated at a temperature above the melting point of the fine plastic powder 6 to be applied. The preheated optical fiber 3 is introduced into the fluidized bed coating tank 7 and made to contact with the fluidized plastic powder 6 to cover the surface of the optical fiber 3 uniformly with the fine powder 6. The attached plastic powder 6 is molten instantaneously by the radiation of laser beam 5, and soldified in the cooling tank 10 to form a uniform plastic coating layer.
