Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the bridging structure occuring in V segregation and to improve the uniformity of solidified structure in the stage of producing high carbon steel by adding specific amts. of rare earth elements into molten steel. CONSTITUTION:In the case of casting molten metal consisting of high carbon steel or high carbon low alloy steel of 0.6-1.1% carbon contents, rare earth elements are so added to said steel that the average contents of the rare earth elements contained in a cast ingot are 0.8-2.0 times the sulfur contained in the molten metal. This results in the increased amt. of nuclear formation of equiaxial crystals in the stage of solidification, the considerable reduction in bridging structure and the considerably improved solidification structure in the axial center parts. There is no need for making ultrasonic flaw detection and the like in the working stages after the casting and the number of stages is reduced.
