Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare an oxygen-containing compound, esp. ethanol, in high selectivity, from CO and H2, by the use of a catalyst composed of platinum, a compound selected from zirconium oxide, hafnium oxide, thorium oxide and titanium oxide, silica, and optionally, rhenium.
CONSTITUTION: An oxygen-containing compound having one or two carbon atoms (esp. containing ethanol as principal component) is prepared by reacting gas containing CO and H2 using a catalyst containing (1) platinum, (2) zirconium oxide, hafnium oxide, thorium oxide or titanium oxide and (3) silica, e.g. Pt-ZrO2-SiO2, Pt-TiO2-SiO2, etc. The catalyst may contain rhenium as the fourth component.
