Abstract
PURPOSE:To read characters in a window envelope excellently by binary-coding a photoelectrically converted signal regarding an area other than a window part as usual, and also binary-coding only a photo-electrically converted signal obtained through the window in the window area. CONSTITUTION:An envelope 10 has an address entry side irradiated with light from a light source 30, and scattered light from the envelope is condensed to a scanning part 40. This scanning part 40 scans on the envelope 10 to convert characters and sumbols photoelectrically, and the resulting signal is led to a scanning signal processing part 60. A gate pulse generating circuit 63 uses the output signal of a window detecting circuit 70 to generate a gate pulse, and a gate circuit 62 receives the signal of the circuit 63 to gate the photoelectrically converted signal. On the basis of a signal obtained by the circuit 62, an AGC circuit 61 varies the amplification factor of the photo-electrically converted signal to convert the signal from the circuit 61 into two kind of video signals by a binary-coding circuit 65.
