Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the cyclic hydride of a conjugated diene polymer, in one step, by contacting said polymer in an inert solvent with a catalyst comprising an organic aluminum halide and an organic halide.
CONSTITUTION: The cyclic hydride of a conjugated diene polymer is prepared in one step reaction, by contacting said polymer, especially cyclic oligomer of butadiene or isoprene with a catalyst composed of an organic aluminum halide of formula R2AlX, R3Al2X3 or RAlX2 (R is alkyl; X is halogen) and an organic halide of formula CHnX'3-nCOOH (X' is halogen; n is 0, 1 or 2), in an inert solvent, thereby effecting the simultaneous cylization and hydrogenation reactions of the polymer. The cyclic hydride obtained by the process, especially the cyclic hydride of the cyclic oligomer of butadiene or isoprene is useful as a raw material of a novel polymer.
