Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily mass-produce a fiber type polarizer for a single mode, by performing wire drawing to a base metal for an eccentric optical fiber, converting it to a fiber, and covering its surface with a metal. CONSTITUTION:An eccentric optical fiber base metal is obtained by vacuum- sealing an optical fiber base metal consisting of a core 1 and a clad 2, into a quartz tube, etc., and wearing it cylindrically. This base metal is converted to a fiber type polarizer by means of wire drawing, and its surface is plated with a metal 3 such as Al, etc. Otherwise, metallic coating is performed at the time of wire drawing. Since this fiber type polarizer is of a remarkably eccentric structure, it is considered equivalently to be the metal 3 which has inserted silica glass in one side of the core 1 and a small quantity of silica glass in the other side. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain a fiber type polarizer for a single mode, which has increased a difference of a transmission loss between a TE0 mode and a TM0 mode.
