PURPOSE:To prevent the increment of an error rate, by giving azimuth angles different from one another to plural rotary magnetic heads and arranging them successively so that the head nearer to the take-up side of a magnetic tape is brought into contact with the magnetic tape more early. CONSTITUTION:Rotary magnetic heads 1A and 1C have the same azimuth angles in one direction, and heads 1B and 1D has the same azimuth angles in a direction opposite to that of heads 1A and 1C. Heads 1A-1D have the same track width W and are different in position from one another by W and are arranged such positions in the scanning direction (track lengthwise direction) Vh that the head nearer to the take-up side (lower side) of a tape 3 is brought into contact with the tape 3 more early. In the recording, heads 1D, 1C, 1B, and 1A terminate recording on a field, where tracks 2D, 2C, 2B and 2A are formed in order, and therefore, the track width of each of tracks 2A-2D becomes the prescribed value W.
