Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently manufacture a metal-base composite material of high performance at a low cost by bundling a fibrous reinforcing material in a prescribed shape at a prescribed density, heating it to a temp. above the m.p. of a matrix metal, and applying a high pressure casting method.
CONSTITUTION: A fibrous reinforcing material 1 of B, C, Al2O3, SiC or the like is bundled with linear elements 2, and the fiber bundle 3 is heated to a temp. above the m.p. of a matrix metal such as Al and set in the mold cavity 5 of a metallic mold 4. The molten matrix metal 7 is injected into the cavity 5 and solidified by cooling while applying a pressure to the metal with a plunger element 8. A heat insulating space 6 is formed between the bundle 2 and the mold 4 to prevent the rapid cooling of the bundle 3, and the matrix metal 7 permeates well into the porous structure of the reinforcing material 1. Since the solidification and shrinkage of the metal 7 are not restrained and blow holes are hardly formed, a composite material with superior mechanical properties can be manufactured.
