CONSTITUTION:An input pattern receives a photoelectric conversion through a preprocessing part A to be binary-coded into white and black backgrounds. The white background (0) of the binary input character pattern is converted at a distance converting part B into an input distance conversion pattern of the numerical value corresponding to the distance from the black background (1). At a discriminating part C, the input distance conversion pattern is overlapped to the standard character distance conversion pattern of each category prepared previously. Then the number (m) of the category having the most accurate coincidence is delivered. As a result, the effect of a shift is obtained with no shift required at all.
