Abstract
PURPOSE: The titled unsaturated polyester resin composition, prepared by adding a pentaerythritol triester to a solution of an unsaturated polyester alkyd resin.
CONSTITUTION: The titled composition is prepared by adding a pentaerythritol ester compound prepared by esterifying pentaerythritol with a higher fatty acid (e.g., capric acid) to a solution prepared by dissolving an unsaturated polyester alkyd resin obtained by esterifying a dicarboxylic acid (anhydride or dialkyl ester) with a glycol (preferably, in the form of powder, particle size ≤ about 10 mesh) in a normally liquid copolymerizable monomer (e.g., styrene or dialkyl phthalate). The pentaerythritol ester compound is added in an amount of at least 3pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. total of the unsaturated polyester alkyd resin and the copolymerizable monomer.
