Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled pitch with a simple device requiring no filter, by mixing an aromatic tar light oil or middle oil solvent with coal tar pitch to precipitate free carbon by gravity and then separating the light oil matter before removing the solvent from it.
CONSTITUTION: A coal tar light oil or middle oil solvent is added to coal tar pitch to be mixed together and then the mixture is left to stand at 150W360°C under a pressure sufficient to maintain the solvent at a liquid state. The light oil portion of the pitch containing no free carbon is separated from the heavy oil portion of the pitch containing free carbon precipitated by gravity, and then the solvent is removed from the light oil portion to prepare the raw pitch for needle coke. This process requires no filtration, so that the process makes it possible to carry out continuous operation, makes the device simple and compact and also enables easy, recovery of the solvent.
