Abstract
PURPOSE:To guide a long wavelength beam with no absorption in a long wavelength region and with a small loss, by forming an element parent body of 3- phase structure on a glass flat plate surface by a gaseous phase chemical reaction and changing the parent body into a thin plate by the heating, melting and expansion. CONSTITUTION:A quartz glass flat plate 1 is welded to form a polygonal cylinder 2, and this cylinder 2 is attached freely rotatably to a glass lathe 4. A multitube burner 5 is set to the lathe 4 to supply the gaseous glass raw material like SiCl4, etc., a fuel gas and a carrier gas of an inactive gas like Ar, He, etc. Thus a gaseous phase chemical reaction is carried out within the flame of the burner 5 to produce the glass fine powder composed of an oxide of SiO2, etc. Then a glass plate 7 of flat plate 3-layer structure having a prescribed size is cut out of the cylinder 2 containing a core layer and a cladding layer. This element parent body 7 is heated, melted and expanded to obtain a desired thickness as a waveguide path element.
