Abstract

PURPOSE: To polymerize a 2,6-disubstituted phenol highly actively, by employing a complex catalyst comprising metal ions and a polymerization solvent-insoluble polymer compound grafted with polymerization solvent-soluble polymer ligands.
CONSTITUTION: The polymer skeleton of a polymerization solvent-insoluble polymer compound, e.g., styrene-divinylbenzene crosslinked copolymer is converted into a peroxide, and then a basic nitrogen-containing ligands-carrying vinyl monomer, e.g., aromatic tert. amine such as pyridine, is grafted onto the above polymer by use of a radical polymerization initiator. Then, a complex catalyst is prepared by mixing the resulting graft polymer compound with a compound containing metal ions, e.g., copper ion, in a solvent, separating from solids and washing off uncoordinated metal ions. Next, by a usual method, a 2,6-disubstituted phenol is solution- polymerized in the presence of oxygen by use of the above complex catalyst.
