Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a display which does not cause coloring phenomena owing to interference light by making the two layers of a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal layer equal in the product of the thicknesses and refractive indices of the respective liquid crystal layers, using one of the liquid crystal layers as a substitute for an optical correction plate and providing no power feed means. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 2a, 2b are provided respectively to middle and lower transparent substrates 1a, 1b, orientation layers 3a, 3b are provided to these, respectively, TN liquid crystals 4a are sealed and a driving circuit 7 is provided. The display device wherein the layers 3d, 3c are provided respectively on the top surface of the substrate 1a and the bottom surface of the substrate 1c, polarization filters 6a, 6b are provided respectively to the top and bottom of laminated cells sealed with TN liquid crystals 4b and, if necessary, a reflection plate 8 is provided under the filter 6b is made. The layer 4b is used as a substitute for an optical correction plate for preventing coloring phenomena of a conventional single layer type cell. The layers 4a, 4b are approximately equal in the product of their thicknesses (d) and double refractive indices DELTAn, and the values of dXDELTAn are set within a 0.4-0.6mu, 0.8-1.2mu or 1.5-1.8mu range. In this way, the display device which is suited for multiplex driving and is considerably reduced of coloring phenomena owing to interference light is obtained.
