PURPOSE:To perform processing without causing important trouble, by providing a means of detecting whether a signal varies in amplitude within a prescribed period after the start of a backward run. CONSTITUTION:A backward read instruction and the output of a signal amplitude detecting circuit are used and when the backward read instruction is sent, a monostable multivibrator 10 and a pulse generating circuit 12 output a detection pulse to a line 120 within a constant time after the backward read instruction is generated. On the other hand, a monostable multivibrator 22 generates a pulse with constant time width similarly from the output of a signal-amplitude detecting circuit 20 and if signal amplitude is not detected until the generation of the detection pulse, an FF40 is set with the detection pulse through the operation of an inverter 20 and an AND circuit 30, judging that the device has fault. The output of the FF40 is inputted to an encoder circuit 50 together with a signal of a check on another device sent from a line 700, and its output is sent to a CPU70 through a channel 60.
