Abstract

PURPOSE: To maintain the quality of an optical fiber and to simplify a coating process by continuously subjecting the fiber to primary coating and secondary coating with resins each having a low Young's modulus in the drawing process.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber is continuously subjected to primary coating and secondary coating with thermoplastic or thermosetting resins. For example, the fiber surface is coated with an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) as the material for the primary coating by means of a heat melting and coating device or the like, and it is continuously coated with a polyester-polyether copolymer as the material for the secondary coating through a heat melting and coating device or the like. The coated fiber is cooled and wound. In order to further enhance the flexibility of the materials, it is effective to foam the materials.
