Abstract

PURPOSE: To cause electrolysis with low cell voltage and good electric current efficiency by disposing electrodes via a specific porous layer on an ion exchange membrane producing hydrogen and halogen with an electrolytic cell provided with a cation exchange membrane through electrolysis of halogen-acid solns.
CONSTITUTION: Aq. solns. of 0.1W12N concs. of waste hydrochloric acids byproduced in various kinds of chemical synthesis processes are electrolyzed in an electrolytic cell using a fluorine-contg. polymer contg. cation exchange group such as sulfonic acid group and carboxylic acid group as a diaphragm, whereby hydrogen and chlorine are produced. Powder of single metal substances such as Ti, Ta, Nb, Zr or the like or their alloys and oxide, various forms of carbon, hydrophilized fluororesins, etc. is kneaded together with a binder and a thickener, and a gas and liquid permeable porous layer of 10W99% porosities and 0.01W200μ thickness which does not act as an electrode is formed on the cation exchange membrane. Anode and cathode in the form of a porous plate, net or the like are disposed on the cation exchange membrane on the surface via the above-mentioned porous layer on the surface having no electrode activity. Electrolytic conduction of electricity is accomplished with the low cell voltage.
